Once I was a clever boy learning the arts of Oxford... is a quotation from the verses written by Bishop Richard Fleming (c.1385-1431) for his tomb in Lincoln Cathedral. Fleming, the founder of Lincoln College in Oxford, is the subject of my research for a D. Phil., and, like me, a son of the West Riding. I have remarked in the past that I have a deeply meaningful on-going relationship with a dead fifteenth century bishop... it was Fleming who, in effect, enabled me to come to Oxford and to learn its arts, and for that I am immensely grateful.

A new gadget


Recently a friend very kindly passed on to me a new iPhone that was surplus to his requirements - my own mobile phone was on its last legs (or whatever mobile phones have). Being me I did not rush to get it set up, but finally this last week decided to treat it as a birthday present and changed over my account to the new device.

I am now having great fun familiarising myself with its touch sensitive screen and technical wizardry and trnsferring and editing my address book. One of the many benefits it affords is a functioning camera - the old one would not transfer photographs - so maybe I can illustrate posts with my own photographic efforts. Watch this space...
