Once I was a clever boy learning the arts of Oxford... is a quotation from the verses written by Bishop Richard Fleming (c.1385-1431) for his tomb in Lincoln Cathedral. Fleming, the founder of Lincoln College in Oxford, is the subject of my research for a D. Phil., and, like me, a son of the West Riding. I have remarked in the past that I have a deeply meaningful on-going relationship with a dead fifteenth century bishop... it was Fleming who, in effect, enabled me to come to Oxford and to learn its arts, and for that I am immensely grateful.

Told you so

In my post Strange goings on in Yorkshire I commented on the amalgamation and reorganisation of three of the Anglican dioceses based in the West Riding of Yorkshire. The Special Correspondent has recently forwarded me this comment from Facebook about this bright idea. It looks as if what I wrote is now (already?) coming to fruition. It can be viewed, with a set of relevant comments, at https://www.facebook.com/robin.ward.37/posts/10153324909543993

I did, when I had the opportunity some months ago at a lecture in Oxford, tell the ecclesiastical civil servant who chaired the committee which came up with the implementation of this scheme, and who happens to be an acquaintance, just how daft an idea it all is in my opinion.
